10 Reasons Why Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom is Worth a Trip!

Amusement and water parks are one of the best ways to spend an outdoorsy summer day with children. Pennsylvania offers a great number of summer getaway options for travelers. Boasting farms, waterways and forests, the state is plastered with wonderful summer retreats. One such destination happens to be Dorney Park.

Once upon a time, Dorney Park was a traditional amusement park that would remind one of magical kingdoms and fairy tales. Over the years our world has seen some big changes and like plenty of other things, Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom underwent modernization. According to many visitors, the park has lost its previous charm to the corporate world. However, at the same time, the park has a great collection of thrilling rides, a water park and family-oriented attractions.

Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom is owned and managed by Cedar Fair and it is situated right outside Allentown, Pennsylvania.

The History of Dorney Park: How Did it Begin?

Way back in 1860, a man named Solomon Dorney constructed a trout hatchery and summer resort on his property situated at the edge of Allentown. By 1870, Dorney transformed the estate into a full-fledged public attraction. In the earlier days, the attractions consisted of games, playground-style rides, refreshment stands, picnic spots, a hotel, and a restaurant. As the years passed by and people grew more fond of the park, Dorney added several more attractions such a compact zoo, botanical gardens and mechanical rides.

Allentown-Kutztown Traction Company bought the park in 1923. Dorney Park was then operated by its new owner Robert Plarr until his death in 1966. After the death of Plarr, the ownership of the amusement park was passed to several people. In 1992, Cedar Fair Entertainment Co. bought the park and since then it has been managed by the company.

Plan Your Day

Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom has a website through which you can check out the must-visit rides and attractions. If you plan wisely, you can explore most of the park within a day! Make sure you go through rides’ requirements, age limits and other specifications. Another tip that may come in handy is to choose a designated spot if a family member goes missing. This will save you time, confusion and panic.

Start Your Day Early

The best time to get to the most of the high-profile rides and attractions is early in the morning. The park is uncrowded between 3:30 and 5:00 as well.

What to Wear?

Don’t forget to pack bathing suits, sunscreen, comfortable shoes, swim shoes and an extra change of clothes for everyone. Keep in mind that the park has a family-friendly ambience and they don’t allow revealing bathing suits.

Locker Rental

For $18 per day, you can rent a locker and store your valuables. In our opinion, $18 is a LOT! If you feel the same, bring some loose cash with you and leave your valuables either at home or in your car. You can also take turns and look after the stuff.

How is the Food?

Like all theme parks, food is pretty costly. You will find a large number of unhealthy fried items and some restaurants will even charge you double! It is best to bring your own basket of goodies, snacks and water cooler.

Who Will Enjoy at Dorney Park?

One of the best things about amusement parks is that they cater to people of all ages. Grown ups and teenagers will have a fine time riding the thrill rides and splashing about at the water park. Kids can enjoy family-based rides, carousals and kiddie pools. When you feel you need a break from all the adventures, head over to the beautiful picnic area and relax at one of the groves.
