Once upon a time, Dorney Park was a traditional amusement park that would remind one of magical kingdoms and fairy tales. Over the years our world has seen some big changes and like plenty of other things, Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom underwent modernization. According to many visitors, the park has lost its previous charm to the corporate world. However, at the same time, the park has a great collection of thrilling rides, a water park and family-oriented attractions.
Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom is owned and managed by Cedar Fair and it is situated right outside Allentown, Pennsylvania.
The History of Dorney Park: How Did it Begin?
Way back in 1860, a man named Solomon Dorney constructed a trout hatchery and summer resort on his property situated at the edge of Allentown. By 1870, Dorney transformed the estate into a full-fledged public attraction. In the earlier days, the attractions consisted of games, playground-style rides, refreshment stands, picnic spots, a hotel, and a restaurant. As the years passed by and people grew more fond of the park, Dorney added several more attractions such a compact zoo, botanical gardens and mechanical rides.
Allentown-Kutztown Traction Company bought the park in 1923. Dorney Park was then operated by its new owner Robert Plarr until his death in 1966. After the death of Plarr, the ownership of the amusement park was passed to several people. In 1992, Cedar Fair Entertainment Co. bought the park and since then it has been managed by the company.
